Chapter 10

When we originally left Portland, we weren't sure how far we were going to make it. We brought a tent but didn't know if camp grounds would be an option. Also some states had hotels open and some didn't even though we didn't want to use hotels. And mostly we didn't know what the rules were for car camping such as if it was allowed or where it was allowed. We figured we would learn as we went and if it didn't work we could always just turn around and go home. On the night of Tuesday, April 28 we learned a valuable lesson that served us well for the rest of our trip: find a place to park while it is still early enough to see your choices. We drove until 1:00am or so reaching Post Falls, ID. No overnight parking allowed! It was too late and too far to go anywhere else. Lesson learned.
After a mostly restless night, we woke on the morning of Wednesday April 29 and headed west on I90 towards Seattle, Washington. Our goal for this portion of the trip was to reach Seattle, drive to Portland and pick up the Pacific Coast Highway and drive to  San Diego.
One of the coolest things we stumbled on was the Columbia River Gorge in central Washington! Knowing that Lewis and Clark had traveled right through here made it all the more thrilling.
Another fun trick we learned along the way is to google whatever town you are in and ask 'where is the best place to take a photograph'?
That is how we found Kerry Park in Seattle!

After leaving Seattle, we headed south towards Portland, Oregon on I5 stopping just short of the Oregon state line for the night.
